Last week, Military Spouse magazine (MSM) announced that it is now accepting nominations for its 2009 Military Spouse of the Year (MSOY) award, sponsored by USAA. The MSOY honoree represents the millions of military spouses who are unsung heroes maintaining the homefront, giving back selflessly to their communities, and providing support to our nation’s troops.
In recognition of their countless contributions, MSM will honor one exemplary military spouse from each service branch and also select one overall winner. The 2009 MSOY will be announced and honored nationally in the June issue of Military Spouse magazine and at the second annual MSOY Awards Ceremony to be held during the week of May 4, 2009 in Washington, DC, in conjunction with National Military Spouse Appreciation Week. I’ve been toying with the notion of starting a quarterly book club under the Military Wives* section of HHC for some time now. I recently threw the idea out in the forums and received some enthusiastic feedback. So, let’s give it whirl!
Our first reading will be Army Wives: The Unwritten Code of Military Marriage by Tanya Biank.

A lot of us have been following Lifetime TV’s smash hit Army Wives and discussing the drama in the forums. I thought it would great to start with the book that inspired the series.
Perhaps, we can gain some insight into the show’s characters if we read about the people who inspired them.
I want to keep the book club simple, informal, and fun.
Are you interested? I hope so! Here is what you need to do to join in:
- If you haven’t registered with Happy Housewives Club yet, join here.
- Once registered, log on to the forums and sign-up under September Military Wives Book Club in the Military Wives section on the boards.
- Buy or borrow a copy of the book

Back to school shopping shouldn’t break your bank!
Be sure to check sales flyers to compare prices. Review newspaper advertisements and catalogs to stay informed about varying prices at different stores.
Take advantage of the benefits of shopping at your local post or base exchange.

The exchange stores offer a price matching program, which includes “warehouse club” prices. On average, an exchange customer saves 17 to 20 percent more on purhases over civilian retailers. That savings does not factor in the exclusion of sales tax! Also, unlike the commissary, there is no surcharge on exchange purchases.
However, if you don’t have access to an exchange or prefer to shop off post/base, remember that your military ID can save you a lot of money. There are many and varied discounts available to military personnel and their families.
