Parenting Patriots

The 4th of July is a great time to talk about parenthood and patriotism. We should all be teaching our children about the rich history of our great nation. I’ve decided to make a deliberate effort to raise patriotic children.

I recently purchased 2 wonderful books to assist in this process and thought I’d share them with you.

My boys are still quite young, however, I don’t think it’s ever too early to instill age-appropriate patriotic values and ideals in them.

It is important that they know who our founding fathers were and what they stood for. They already know the Pledge of Allegiance and our National Anthem. I’ve been teaching them what our flag means and what it symbolizes. I’ve also been teaching them how to show respect for Old Glory. I want them to learn about the Declaration of Independence, The Bill of Rights, our U.S. Constitution, and the the Federalist Papers. I will help them to understand how our government works and what democracy really means. I don’t’ want them to take their liberties and way of life for granted. I want them to reflect upon the true costs of freedom and to revere those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect it.

Moreover, I want them to understand why their father chooses to be a soldier and why he believes in the call to duty, in honor, and in our country. I want them to be proud to be Americans!
