Nicole’s Tips on Entertaining Military Style!

I remember being a young airman, away from my family for the first holiday. It was Thanksgiving. My First Sergeant invited a bunch of us “newbie’s” over for a large holiday dinner. His wife not only cooked an amazing meal, but she presented it beautifully and provided a comfortable and welcoming environment. As a military wife myself now, I know how important entertaining is in the military environment.

Home is Where the Military Sends You!

This phrase epitomizes the lifestyle of a military wife. In my case, the Army determines where we’ll live. Transforming bland, sterile quarters into “home sweet home” every couple years can be a real challenge, especially on a military salary. A little money and creativity can go along way. For me, it’s worth the effort and I view decorating as a quality of life investment.

Wherever we go, I keep this sign prominently displayed, with family pictures propped up nearby. It reminds me that home really is where the heart is. I love putting our signature on government housing. We move a lot! Even though the environment may be new and strange, it’s important for me to create a place where my family feels happy, secure, and a sense of belonging and love.

I’ve created a list of tips and ideas on how you can make your military house feel like a home too. Click here to learn more.

Do You Know How Much Your Husband Really Makes?

I hear wives complaining all the time about how little their husbands earn, compared to their civilian counterparts. I gripe too. I believe our troops deserve better pay. However, you need to look past the LES and take into consideration the total value of the military compensation package. We do get a lot of non-cash perks like FREE health care, FREE legal services, FREE financial counseling services, and FREE special needs services. We also get great tax breaks. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the average active duty service member receives a compensations package worth almost $100,000! Take advantage of the benefits, they add up fast! Military Wives Need Support Too!

The military lifestyle can be very demanding. Frequent moves, war-time tension and anxiety, living far from family, and juggling multiple household roles can really take a toll on our physical and mental well-being. As military wives, we’re the cornerstones of support for our husbands and families. We’re responsible for providing continuity and stability on the home front.

Often times we fail to recognize that we need support, too, especially when our men are away. Our civilian friends and family members love us and want to support us but sometimes they just can’t relate. This is why it is so important to seek out groups that can provide you the opportunity to share common experiences, give and receive emotional support, and learn about new resources. The military provides and extensive network of support groups and centers. You can find one here.

There is comfort in cohesion. Don’t isolate yourself. The more connected you are, the easier life will be for you. Seek out and befriend other military wives in your community. These women understand the trials and tribulations associated with our way of life.

I highly encourage you to get involved with your local unit and/or spouse support groups! Not only are they a great place to make friends and have fun, but they also act as a safety net in the event of an emergency. You can call them for help when unforeseen problems or crises arise (i.e. car repairs, financial problems, medical issues, death, etc.). Moreover, these groups act as a network of communication from the chain of command to the family members. When your husband is on temporary duty (TDY) or deployed, your unit support group is often the sole link to current information regarding his status and whereabouts.

And remember, the Happy Housewives Club is here for you too, always!

Proud military wife, Heidi and her family, read her story…

My name is Heidi Powell known as noel1222 on the forums here. I am the proud mother of two girls and one boy and wife to a US Army soldier. He has been serving as a non commissioned officer for over twenty years. I am not just a happy housewife. I am happy military wife. I love being an American. I love the freedoms I am privileged to have as a United States citizen. My husband and many before him have sacrificed to make sure we keep our freedoms. This is not an easy job. In my opinion any man that volunteers his life for his country is heroic beyond measure. My husband, like many others is a good, honest man with a true patriotism for his country. It runs to the very core of his heart. There is nothing he would not do for God, his country and family. What he asks of me in return is very little in comparison. I am so blessed to have a man like this. So here is what I ask of myself. I must be the best wife I can be. Read more »
